Back in the States and I’m Going to Hell

Back in the US.  Land of cheap gas, groceries, and readily available motorcycle parts.  Or at least that was my expectations after traveling through Canada and Alaska for 6 weeks.  From Nakusp I went to Spokane, Washington and found the first two of those items and the location of two Suzuki parts dealers nearby for the third. Nakusp Motorcycle Travel Meeting

If you can make me feel like a stay at home bum or someone that needs to find a job so that I can go see the world then it’s safe to say I’m in a place I want to be.  That place was Horizons Unlimited West Candada meetup in Nakusp British Colombia.  Horizons was the first site I came across when I start investigating motorcycle travel and one that I’ve gone back to many times since for information and inspiration.

What’s Ahead On My Motorcycle Travels South?

I actually wrote most of this post the same time as my 100 day review, then promptly disappeared for two weeks.  Since then, I returned to Lake Louise for 10 days of mountain climbing (scrambling up no ropes required) and went to Nakusp BC for a Horizons Unlimited motorcycle travel meeting.  I’m going to quickly put out this post with the rest of this year’s plans then return to my alternate day posting schedule to get caught back up.  Sorry for the disappearance, but I can’t promise it won’t be the last time.

Motorcycle Travel Isn’t Always Easy

Leaving the Alaskan peninsula I was on a high from all the animals I got to see, touch, and photograph.  Not only that, but I had a plan.  To sneak up to Dawson for their music festival then head to southern Alaska.  It meant there would be some backtracking and seeing roads twice and I was ok with that.  I had a few days to make it there in too.

Ride Report #4 – Upcoming Maintenance

I’ve traveled 8,000 miles on my V-Strom so far passing through 7 states and two providences.  Or is it 7,500 miles and 800 kilometers now?  I could have made it to this year’s destination of San Diego departing from the same point and going via Miami, Portland Maine, and Seattle with 500 miles left over to put that in perspective.  Here’s the map of where I have gone instead and I’m not even halfway yet.

Where to Go and What to Do?

Open a map and put one finger in Texas and another in Alaska.  Oh wait, maybe you need a different map.  There’s a good chance that Alaska has its own little insert and not even where it belongs.  In my atlas, Alaska and its 570,000 square miles loses 1/3 of its lone page to Arizona cities.  While the only state before it, Alabama at 1/10 the size of Alaska gets two pages.
