Win A Travel Book #4

The winner of the second contest selected The Voyage of the Beagle by Charles Darwin.  I had this book to get me ready for the trip to the Galapagos Islands that I took in November of 2008.  I remember getting a bit bogged down with it as it covers his entire journey of a couple years.  As my time to go to the islands approached I skipped ahead to his visit there which I found more entertaining.

The part that stands out most still is his talking about the stupidity of the marine iguanas.  He tested this theory by picking one up by the tail swinging it around and throwing it into the ocean.  It swam right back to where it was and he repeated the “experiment”.  As I recall this went on for at least an hour and was repeated with more than one iguana to ensure that he hadn’t found a special case.  Perhaps the Darwin Awards were developed along with his theory of evolution.

Without a doubt the Galapagos are the most magical animal place I have been.  The animals still could hardly care about the tourists parading past and go about their lives just the same.  In my week there I saw magnificent birds, a snake eating a lizard, a seal lion give birth on the beach, and numerous other once in a lifetime sites.  I haven’t put my photos from that trip on this site, but I need to.  Maybe once I’m back in San Diego.

I’m still reading House of Rain by Craig Childs and loving it.  I’ll definitely be reading more of his books in the future.  Anyone heading on a trip to the four corners region or interested in Native American history of this area should check it out.

With that behind us, onto the next contest.

There are two ways to enter

  1. Leave a comment on this post.
  2. ‘Like’ my Facebook Fan Page and leave a comment on the link for this post or on the wall.

That’s all you have to do. If you do both of these then you will be entered twice. I will be paying for shipping out of my own pocket which means they’ll be going by media mail, slow and cheap. I am not limiting this to the US either. Winners can come from around the globe.

The comments can be about whatever you like.  I’ve been talking about the animals I saw in the Galapagos and I saw my first wild bear this week so this week’s theme is to share a wild animal experience that you’ve had.  Any close encounters, rare sightings, or magical moments out there?  Email me a picture if you want I’ll put them in the next Travel Book post.

See the Google Doc Spreadsheet of books here.  If you’re new to my win a Travel Book Contest see the first post to find out how it came about.
